Track Content that People Copy From Your Site

What are people copying from your website and sharing with their friends? Can you get links from this? Introducing Tynt…

Tynt, is a new web service which aims to be the Analytics company for copy/paste on your site. You can track what is copied (words, images), where on your site it was copied from and even help you to get links back from the content!

The Results

I’ve installed it on my blog here and with a few days of data, I’m starting to see what is getting copied:

Shortcomings

So far, I haven’t worked out how to view the actual text that gets copied, but I can imagine that it’s possible to track that within Google Analytics, using Events Tracking. I might tackle this challenge when I understand JavaScript more… until then, Tynt is a great tool to see what content is engaging users or taking them from your pages through “Search copies”.

  1. Interesting concept, i think something needs to be done about site piracy. It is unfair that someone spends so much time writing content for their site and someone rips it off.

  2. Great post. It is so frustrating to slave over original content only to have it swiped.

Ah so this is what eHow was using. I was wondering what it was and where I could find something like it a while back. Nice to see the full thing is way more than just a “read more” link. This + post/site link in RSS feeds and you’re set.
